Breaking this down into the two most important sections it’s important to first question whether your mechanical skills are up to putting this together. After you make your purchase you will have a ton of large steel filled heavy boxes delivered to your door. You must really ask yourself: do you have space, time and understanding to put this together on your own? If not installed correctly this can end up costing you a lot of money and be incredibly dangerous for you when on the road.
Although I wanted the basic trailer when I first contacted the company, I’m now glad I upgraded to one of the utility bed models. Rather than stuffing my small SUV with pedal drives, gear crates, seats, paddles and fishing tackle, I now bungee stuff beneath my kayaks. It speeds up loading, and I can rinse the salt off my kayaks and fishing gear simultaneously. Transporting salty accessories on the trailer also protects the interior of my SUV from corrosion. After hosing everything off, I just back the loaded trailer into the garage, keeping my kayaks and gear secure overnight, ready for the morning fishing trip. Oru Bay ST folding kayak. Barely used!. Condition is Used. This a fantastic and ingenious kayak. Very portable and stowable for those with limited space or those that want to travel with their kayak. I have used it maybe 10 times at the most, which is why I am selling it. I have a smaller, cheaper kayak. I am including the float bags, carry strap, and repair kit. Not sure how I will ship it yet, but I will make sure it gets to you. Kayak is 12' long, 25" wide, 28 lbs. Max capacity of 300 lbs. Very smooth and fast paddling kayak. Great for small lakes to open water.
Purchased the 4x5 Paddlesport/Utility trailer in late August after searching hi and low for a suitable transport for our kayaks. We are getting too old to lift 55Lbs + kayaks on to a car roof but want to continue using them in NH. Reviewed Malone and Loadrite and decided on the Dock Doctors after considering price, quality and functionality. Used once and loved the trailer.

First, you are exposed to Polar weather and sea conditions, and if you don’t dress warmly enough you might be some time before getting back to the main ship. Because you are on Polar waters there is a chance of exposure to hypothermia. For these reasons kayak excursions are limited to 14 passengers total – this number lets our accompanying guides keep track of everyone and make sure that everyone is having a good time.
Whether you’ve been kayaking for years or just starting out in the kayak life, if you have a kayak, you need a way to transport it. In fact, there’s a good chance that you’ll often need a way to transport more than one; you’ll probably want to go with friends and family, too. At the very least, consider that at some point, you may marry or have children that share in your kayaking adventures. As time goes, it will become more and more apparent to you that you need a kayak trailer.
One guide stays with the group in a support kayak, while another trails nearby in a Zodiac just in case of emergencies that require a faster retreat back to the main ship. A kayak trailer easily tows behind most vehicles and typically requires a simple hitch and electrical connection to enable brake lights. They are low to the ground, easier to load and are able to carry even the largest of kayaks, making them the perfect solution to the kayak-wrestling dilemma. Many of the most popular trailers are also able to haul bicycles, canoes and even cargo boxes, making them as versatile as any roof rack and, with multiple sizes available, many trailers surpass roof racks in carrying capacity.
Primary stability is often a big concern to a beginner, while secondary stability matters both to beginners and experienced travelers. By example, a wide, flat-bottomed kayak will have high primary stability and feel very stable on flat water. However, when a steep wave breaks on such a boat, it can be easily overturned because the flat bottom is no longer level. By contrast, a kayak with a narrower, more rounded hull with more hull flare can be edged or leaned into waves and (in the hands of a skilled kayaker) provides a safer, more comfortable response on stormy seas. Kayaks with only moderate primary, but excellent secondary stability are, in general, considered more seaworthy, especially in challenging conditions.
10) The most important lesson for those of you who come from fishing to kayak fishing is this: A bad day kayak fishing is still a good day kayaking. I struggle sometimes to remember this one. But studies show, exercise makes us happier people. So get out there, paddle and fish. Don’t be scared to put in some work. Some of my most rewarding days involve lots of paddling to find the fish. And when it pays off, I feel like a warrior.
A hand trailer is one that you will push or pull yourself. It’s intended to get your kayak into the water with ease. For example, a more popular spot to put into the river will often have substantial traffic and backing your truck into the “loading zone” will likely not be possible. (Especially if the river has a bit of a drop off, like most do). You will likely park a bit of a trek from the water and getting your kayak there will be all the easier of you have a portable conveyance that will allow you to roll the kayak to the water. A bike trailer is often one that will operate as a hand trailer, but also attach to your bike so that you can travel greater distances. If you plan on biking to your destination to start your kayaking trek, then you’ll want to look into a bike trailer that will also allow you to operate it as a hand trailer, too.
Brake lights. Another big safety feature you’ll want to look into for your truck kayak trailer are functioning brake lights. If the car behind you on the road doesn’t know you’re braking they’re more likely to hit you. Checking your states laws on trailers and brake lights may make it more than a convenience and safety issue; you may find it’s the law in your state.
A specialized variant of racing craft called a surf ski has an open cockpit and can be up to 21 feet (6.4 m) long but only 18 inches (46 cm) wide, requiring expert balance and paddling skill. Surf skis were originally created for surf and are still used in races in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. They have become popular in the United States for ocean races, lake races and even downriver races.
