If you lose control of your kayak, don’t fight it. Imagine driving down a road and losing control of your car due to ice, dirt or other slick conditions. Trying to regain control of the vehicle abruptly could cause you to overcorrect and make the situation worse. Instead, it’s best to maintain as much control of the car as possible and move in the direction of the vehicle. The same applies to kayaking. If you suddenly start to spin, move with the kayak and adjust accordingly.
A specialized variant of racing craft called a surf ski has an open cockpit and can be up to 21 feet (6.4 m) long but only 18 inches (46 cm) wide, requiring expert balance and paddling skill. Surf skis were originally created for surf and are still used in races in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. They have become popular in the United States for ocean races, lake races and even downriver races.
My family LOVES this trailer. We do a lot of camping and we needed a trailer that can hold all our camping equipment and our two canoes. The Dock Doctor's Paddlesport/Utility trailer was the only trailer that met all our needs. Was also really impressed with their customer service. Typically they answered every call and when I did have to leave a message they usually responded in a couple of hours. The optional accessories were added in a timely manner, and the trailer was delivered on time as promised.
Fishing kayaks have been surging in popularity. These craft allow you to move stealthily across the water without the expense, upkeep, and fuel needed for a larger boat. Fishing kayaks are designed for comfort and stability and they come with convenient features for anglers, from rod holders to livewells. The challenge with fishing kayaks is that they’re often too heavy to load onto the roof of a car or SUV. It’s common for fishing kayaks to weigh over 75 pounds and some weigh over 125 pounds!
The kayak car trailer also has LED lights that show people when you’re turning and breaking. It even has springs that give your gear the smoothest ride possible. All of this is included in the trailer package and is easy to setup and install. It is also watertight so it will stand up to mother nature and being submerged for short periods of time while you unload.
Sit-on-top kayaks come in 1-4 paddler configurations. Sit-on-top kayaks are particularly popular for fishing and SCUBA diving, since participants need to easily enter and exit the water, change seating positions, and access hatches and storage wells. Ordinarily the seat of a sit-on-top is slightly above water level, so the center of gravity for the paddler is higher than in a traditional kayak. To compensate for the higher center of gravity, sit-on-tops are often wider and slower than a traditional kayak of the same length.

You will need to figure out how much gear you actually need to carry. These trailers range from 1 to 4 kayaks but won’t be hauling any more than that unless you get a specialty trailer. Every trailer on our list is lightweight yet built from materials that make them strong to hold plenty of kayaks. This is done by using a strong galvanized steel. It is not only one of the strongest and most durable materials, it is also rust and corrosion resistant. This means that you can pull the trailer up to the ocean without worrying that it will start to degrade.
How much your kayak weighs is entirely dependent on what type of kayak you get. You can get a kayak that weighs 20 pounds or some that weighs 80 pounds, all sizes in between and a few outliers on either extreme. You can get an inflatable kayak that will weigh less than 10 pounds and you can get a heavy duty one that weighs 100 – it’s all up to you. There are three main materials from which kayaks are made are Polyethylene, Fiberglass or Composite. Poly is a type of plastic and is the least expensive (but heaviest). Fiberglass is a mid range for both weight and price and composite is the most expensive and lightest. You get what you pay for; and a kayak is no different.
Dear Armand, thank you for your comments... we truly appreciate your feedback! These are all great comments to help us improve our product. We are sorry to hear your hitch pin was stolen off your trailer, please contact us and we can provide a replacement. The pins we use are stainless steel, rather than a standard 1/2" pin which would be zinc and prone to rusting. You also can find basic info on the trailer VIN sticker, such as tire size, GVWR, load capacity, etc... This is located on the front edge of the trailer by the tongue. Enjoy your trailer and please contact us if there is anything you need.
You can strap virtually anything to a car given the right gear and thorough enough straps. The most efficient way would be to buy specialized kayak racks intended for strapping your kayak to your car. But you can strap your kayak (or two, but probably not more than two safely) with just the roof rack and cross bars. Without the cross bars, you’ll certainly lose security and driving at normal speeds with kayak(s) aboard will become a safety concern.
