Length alone does not fully predict a kayak's maneuverability: a second design element is rocker, i.e. its lengthwise curvature. A heavily rockered boat curves more, shortening its effective waterline. For example, an 18-foot (5.5 m) kayak with no rocker is in the water from end to end. In contrast, the bow and stern of a rockered boat are out of the water, shortening its lengthwise waterline to only 16 ft (4.9 m). Rocker is generally most evident at the ends, and in moderation improves handling. Similarly, although a rockered whitewater boat may only be a few feet shorter than a typical recreational kayak, its waterline is far shorter and its maneuverability far greater. When surfing, a heavily rockered boat is less likely to lock into the wave as the bow and stern are still above water. A boat with less rocker cuts into the wave and makes it harder to turn while surfing.

Typically most kayak trailers have a capacity of around two to four different kayaks at a time. The manufacturer should have a recommendation and a maximum capacity rating for the trailer. This criteria alone will give you a better idea for what you need. Some of these trailers can potentially be used as multi purpose transportation for other things such as paddle boards, bikes, canoes or even boats depending on it’s capacity.

One of the great things about whitewater kayaking is making friends who share your passion. Running the rapids with a friend or a crew of adventure buddies is not only more fun; it’s safer. Whitewater kayaking is essentially risky, so you want to go in groups in case anyone is injured. However, the logistics of shuttling multiple boats to and from the put-in and the take-out point can be quite challenging and time consuming.

Just like boating, surfing and any other watersport, kayaking can place a kayaker’s health and safety at risk — especially if the individual fails to practice responsible safety precautions. Even though these dangers exist, you can still have a fantastic adventure in your kayak. Creating and following a safety checklist can help you have a safe and fun experience on the water.
There seem to be no anthropometry stats of kayakers, who may not be representative of the general population. In the American civilian population of the early 1960s, about 0.7% of men and 9% of women weighed under 50 kg (110 lb); 20% of men and 7% of women weighed over 190 pounds (86 kg). In the same population in the late sixties, the average weight of both male and female children crossed 50 kg (110 lb) at age thirteen. In the early 2000s, it was a year or two earlier, and the mean weight of adults was over 10 kg (22 lb) heavier. Also in the early 2000s, the mean weight of men was 190 pounds (86 kg), and the mean weight of women was 163 pounds (74 kg).
Newcomers will often want a craft with high primary stability (see above). The southern method is a wider kayak. The northern method is a removable pair of outriggers, lashed across the stern deck. Such an outrigger pair is often homemade of a small plank and found floats such as empty bottles or plastic ducks. Outriggers are also made commercially, especially for fishing kayaks and sailing. If the floats are set so that they are both in the water, they give primary stability, but produce more drag. If they are set so that they are both out of the water when the kayak is balanced, they give secondary stability.

To strap your kayak properly get the straps tight and add one extra rung on the ratchet. Make sure the straps are completely straight. If they are at an angle the straps will become loose when you start driving. This will ultimately cause your kayak trailer to shift and even have your kayak fall off the trailer. You can tell it’s strapped properly when the kayak won’t move when you push on it when the straps are completely vertical.
The size of the trailer tongue is the distance between the axle and the hitch. Why does this matter? It matters because it determines what type of trailer to get in conjunction to the size of kayak you have. If you have a longer Sea Kayak or even a tandem you will want a longer trailer tongue length. On the contrary if you have a shorter kayak like a recreational sized yak then you can get away with a shorter tongue length.
I decided to try kayak fishing. I’d fished as a kid, on occasion as a teen, but hadn’t done much in my adult life. So I started casting lines from a used kayak in April of 2013. I got into kayak fishing thinking that it would be a good marketing angle, to pick up some skills, and to relate to that portion of the paddle-sports market. I also thought it wouldn’t hurt to appeal to the larger fishing market. I had no idea that this motivation would quickly turn into an absolute obsession, and that within me lay dormant a passion that exploded with that first cast and that first kayak caught bass.
If you tip in calm waters, flip the kayak over by grabbing both sides of the cockpit and climb back in if you are able. If you are unable to do this, grab the kayak and swim back to shore or shallow water. If your kayak tips while you’re in a current, hold the kayak with just one arm. Continue to face upward to ensure you can breathe. Keep your body horizontal to the surface of the water and backstroke to the shore or shallower water.
“Years ago I suggested on this web site, orange hand cleaner for removal of oil/tar. Spike emailed me asking that I keep an eye on the cleaned area for signs of “reactions”. I still have the OK Scrambler. The area cleaned looks the same as the rest of the kayak. I do store the kayak indoors and use “303” protectant about once per month.
