Native people made many types of boat for different purposes. The Aleut baidarka was made in double or triple cockpit designs, for hunting and transporting passengers or goods. An umiak is a large open sea canoe, ranging from 17 to 30 feet (5.2 to 9.1 m), made with seal skins and wood. It is considered a kayak although it was originally paddled with single-bladed paddles, and typically had more than one paddler.
Whitewater kayaks are rotomolded in a semi-rigid, high impact plastic, usually polyethylene. Careful construction ensures that the boat remains structurally sound when subjected to fast-moving water. The plastic hull allows these kayaks to bounce off rocks without leaking, although they scratch and eventually puncture with enough use. Whitewater kayaks range from 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3.0 m) long. The more kayaks you own and the more often you use them will determine how much you would benefit from a kayak trailer. It’s true that for one (or maybe 2) you can toss it in the back (and front) of your SUV or strap it to a roof rack but even that is definitely a struggle that you won’t want to do frequently. Even if you have a smooth and uncomplicated method of transporting your kayak, that doesn’t mean you have a good method of hauling it from truck to beach or dock. A hand trailer to pull your kayak from the car to your tent and then to the water will go a long way in keeping your outing stress-free.

Recreational kayaks are designed for the casual paddler interested in fishing, photography, or a peaceful paddle on a lake, flatwater stream or protected salt water away from strong ocean waves. These boats presently make up the largest segment of kayak sales. Compared to other kayaks, recreational kayaks have a larger cockpit for easier entry and exit and a wider beam (27–36 inches (69–91 cm)) for more stability. They are generally less than 12 feet (3.7 m) in length and have limited cargo capacity. Less expensive materials like polyethylene and fewer options keep these boats relatively inexpensive. Most canoe/kayak clubs offer introductory instruction in recreational boats. They do not perform as well in the sea. The recreational kayak is usually a type of touring kayak.

Newcomers will often want a craft with high primary stability (see above). The southern method is a wider kayak. The northern method is a removable pair of outriggers, lashed across the stern deck.[9][15] Such an outrigger pair is often homemade of a small plank and found floats such as empty bottles or plastic ducks.[16] Outriggers are also made commercially, especially for fishing kayaks and sailing. If the floats are set so that they are both in the water, they give primary stability, but produce more drag. If they are set so that they are both out of the water when the kayak is balanced, they give secondary stability.[17][18]
Once you’ve mastered how to kayak as a beginner, you may want to enhance your skill level and eventually take on whitewater kayaking. We don’t blame you — whitewater kayaking can be an exhilarating experience that allows you to view nature from a perspective like no other. If you get to the point where you’d like to consider taking on this challenge, here are a few whitewater kayaking tips you should know:

Folding kayaks are direct descendants of the skin-on-frame boats used by the Inuit and Greenlandic peoples. Modern folding kayaks are constructed from a wooden or aluminum frame over which is placed a synthetic skin made of polyester, cotton canvas, polyurethane, or Hypalon. They are more expensive than inflatable kayaks, but have the advantage of greater stiffness and consequently better seaworthiness.
These manufacturers offer special models for fishing that are designed and accessorized for this sport, including specially designed hatches, built-in coolers & rod holders, gps receivers and equipment mounts. Other accessories include live wells, anchor trolleys and running lights. Specially designed fishing kayaks usually have designs similar to those of recreational sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks characterized by very wide beams (up to 36 inches) that increase lateral stability. The increases stability allows for the angler to stand up and fish on the kayak. These kayaks provide a considerable space for storage inside their hulls which allow the angler to stow rods, fishing gear, batteries for fish finders, extra paddles, anchors, and wheels to tow the kayak from vehicle to the water. The cutouts molded into the top of the kayaks are well-suited to hold milk crates with additional supplies. Some anglers equip their fishing kayaks with outriggers to further increase stability.[3] In recent years people have begun using kayaks for fly fishing, most models suited for upright fly casting include upright braces that allow you to safely stand up.[4]
Be sure to always check the length restrictions that your trailer will have. You do not want to be driving down the road with a ton of overhang from your kayak. Typically speaking the length of your trailer tongue will determine the length of a kayak trailer can hold. While opting for a compact trailer may be desirable, it isn’t always the best idea for this very reason. Being restricted with what you can tow along with your trailer can be frustrating. Be sure to avoid this frustration by having all the facts before you make your purchase.
One of the great things about whitewater kayaking is making friends who share your passion. Running the rapids with a friend or a crew of adventure buddies is not only more fun; it’s safer. Whitewater kayaking is essentially risky, so you want to go in groups in case anyone is injured. However, the logistics of shuttling multiple boats to and from the put-in and the take-out point can be quite challenging and time consuming.
Avid kayakers can enjoy the features of sit-in kayaks, which may be equipped with an adjustable seat, molded-in cup holders, padded cushioning and roomy cockpits for extended time on the water. Sit-in kayak privide a little more protection from your environment while paddling, but can be more difficult to get in and out of. First, you must ensure that the weight of your kayak trailer remains in the safe towable limit of your cars hitch rating. Second, you will want to ensure that your kayaks are properly secured. If all of this is correct, then you will have no problems towing your kayak trailer for long distance travel.

Before you learn how to ride in a kayak, you first need to learn how to get in and out of a kayak. Getting in and out of a kayak can be tricky, but we’re confident that after a little practice, you’ll catch on quickly. Put simply, there are two different ways which you will likely enter a kayak — getting into a kayak on land or in shallow depths of water, or getting into one that’s already in deeper water. Both options have their advantages and challenges.


Be sure to take the weight capacity into account not only so you can decide if it will hold your kayak but also so that you are sure your vehicle will be able to tow it at full capacity. Checking how many kayaks it will tow is also important as well as the length of kayak suitable for it. This will show you if you will have the option to tow paddleboards and canoes as well. To strap your kayak properly get the straps tight and add one extra rung on the ratchet. Make sure the straps are completely straight. If they are at an angle the straps will become loose when you start driving. This will ultimately cause your kayak trailer to shift and even have your kayak fall off the trailer. You can tell it’s strapped properly when the kayak won’t move when you push on it when the straps are completely vertical.


One of the most common uses of kayaks for hobbyists is whitewater kayaking. Whitewater kayaking is when a kayaker traverses down a series of rapids. The difficulty of these rapid ranges from Class I to Class VI. The difficulty of rapids often changes with water level and debris in the river. Debris that inhibits a kayakers path are often called "strainers" as they "strain" out the kayakers like a colander. There are often training camps as well as man-made structures to help train kayakers.[22]
