Regardless of which body of water you choose to kayak in, it’s a good idea to plan out a route ahead of time. If you’re kayaking in a lake or pond, be aware of shoreline areas which you won’t be able to easily access in the event of an emergency. If you’re kayaking down a river or stream, make sure you choose a route with typically calm waters. It’s best to stay away from areas which could become more challenging if you accidentally paddle too far, especially if you’re new to kayaking.
Whether you’ve been kayaking for years or just starting out in the kayak life, if you have a kayak, you need a way to transport it. In fact, there’s a good chance that you’ll often need a way to transport more than one; you’ll probably want to go with friends and family, too. At the very least, consider that at some point, you may marry or have children that share in your kayaking adventures. As time goes, it will become more and more apparent to you that you need a kayak trailer.

Once you’ve mastered how to kayak as a beginner, you may want to enhance your skill level and eventually take on whitewater kayaking. If you just bought a kayak (congratulations!), you may have come to the quick realization that getting it from your home to the water looked a lot easier in the brochure. You may have tried roof racks, cam straps or even stuffing it into your buddies hatchback – nothing working quite how you had envisioned it. Kayak manufacturers have focused on stability and performance in their recent designs, often sacrificing portability. The result has been a kayak that is great on the water but not great to get to the water! Our favorite way to make your time with your new boat feel less like a CrossFit workout and more like the brochure is a kayak trailer!
I started working at Appomattox River Company in May of 2012. That fall I had moved into a marketing-digital role and begun looking for ways to increase our brand awareness. Appomattox River Company already had a good name in the paddle-sports industry, and I wanted to find more people and draw them into the fun. I paddled some canoes as a kid, and I’d paddled a little whitewater, but there were so many long-time canoeists and whitewater paddlers in the company here in Farmville, that I decided to tackle a different scene.
If you lose control of your kayak, don’t fight it. Imagine driving down a road and losing control of your car due to ice, dirt or other slick conditions. Trying to regain control of the vehicle abruptly could cause you to overcorrect and make the situation worse. Instead, it’s best to maintain as much control of the car as possible and move in the direction of the vehicle. The same applies to kayaking. If you suddenly start to spin, move with the kayak and adjust accordingly.
You should expect any amount of wind, from a small breeze to a huge gust, to have some effect on your kayak. This is normal, and you can readily compensate for it. To conserve energy, paddle with the wind and not into it if you can. You can also paddle harder, use a rudder or add an extra stroke to your downwind side in order to make adequate wind corrections.
The sea kayak, though descended directly from traditional types, is implemented in a variety of materials. Sea kayaks typically have a longer waterline, and provisions for below-deck storage of cargo. Sea kayaks may also have rudders or skegs (fixed rudder) and upturned bow or stern profiles for wave shedding. Modern sea kayaks usually have two or more internal bulkheads. Some models can accommodate two or sometimes three paddlers.
Native people made many types of boat for different purposes. The Aleut baidarka was made in double or triple cockpit designs, for hunting and transporting passengers or goods. An umiak is a large open sea canoe, ranging from 17 to 30 feet (5.2 to 9.1 m), made with seal skins and wood. It is considered a kayak although it was originally paddled with single-bladed paddles, and typically had more than one paddler.
Brake lights. Another big safety feature you’ll want to look into for your truck kayak trailer are functioning brake lights. If the car behind you on the road doesn’t know you’re braking they’re more likely to hit you. Checking your states laws on trailers and brake lights may make it more than a convenience and safety issue; you may find it’s the law in your state.

Buying a pre-built trailer is often quite a bit more expensive. For those who are on a tighter budget, buying one that you will have to build yourself is a much better option. Like most other things, buying online is a great way to reduce your price and get the best deal possible. If price is of serious concern to you then you may want to opt for a used trailer. These will typically run quite a bit cheaper but can be quite a bit harder to find.

Kayak sprint has been in every summer olympics since it debuted at the 1936 summer olympics.[22] Racing is governed by the International Canoe Federation.
Recreational kayaks are designed for the casual paddler interested in fishing, photography, or a peaceful paddle on a lake, flatwater stream or protected salt water away from strong ocean waves. These boats presently make up the largest segment of kayak sales. Compared to other kayaks, recreational kayaks have a larger cockpit for easier entry and exit and a wider beam (27–36 inches (69–91 cm)) for more stability. They are generally less than 12 feet (3.7 m) in length and have limited cargo capacity. Less expensive materials like polyethylene and fewer options keep these boats relatively inexpensive. Most canoe/kayak clubs offer introductory instruction in recreational boats. They do not perform as well in the sea. The recreational kayak is usually a type of touring kayak.
One type, the playboat, is short, with a scooped bow and blunt stern. These trade speed and stability for high maneuverability. Their primary use is performing tricks in individual water features or short stretches of river. In playboating or freestyle competition (also known as rodeo boating), kayakers exploit the complex currents of rapids to execute a series of tricks, which are scored for skill and style.
It is important to consider how long of a kayak your trailer will be able to accommodate for the main reason if you don’t want a lot of overhang. Having overhang on your trailer can result in your kayak not sitting as securely and can risk an accident. More than just tandem kayaks, ocean kayaks tend to be a lot longer in length as well so be sure to consider this before purchasing.

Contemporary traditional-style kayaks trace their origins primarily to the native boats of Alaska, northern Canada, and Southwest Greenland. Wooden kayaks and fabric kayaks on wooden frames dominated the market up until the 1950s, when fiberglass boats were first introduced in the US, and inflatable rubberized fabric boats were first introduced in Europe. Rotomolded plastic kayaks first appeared in 1973, and most kayaks today are made from roto-molded polyethylene resins. The development of plastic and rubberized inflatable kayaks arguably initiated the development of freestyle kayaking as we see it today, since these boats could be made smaller, stronger and more resilient than fiberglass boats.
